Could this actually be true?

Tulsi Gabbard, Former Hawaii Rep., has claimed that former President Barack Obama is behind the decision to establish a Disinformation Governance Board. She further compared the Board to George Orwell’s “Ministry of Truth.”

“Biden is just a front man,” Gabbard tweeted on Sunday. “Obama, April 21: social media censors ‘don’t go far enough,’ so the government needs to step in to do the job. Six days later, Homeland Security rolls out the ‘Ministry of Truth’ (aka Disinformation Governance Board).”

Gabbard, who is a Democrat, referred to last week’s speech that Obama gave at Stanford University. During the long speech, he spoke about how tech companies are not doing enough to moderate online content.

“Now the good news is that almost all the big tech platforms now acknowledge some responsibility for the content on their platforms, and they’re investing in a large team of people to monitor it,” Obama said during the speech. “Given the sheer volume of content, this strategy can feel like a game of Whac-A-Mole.”

Obama spoke about how employees at these companies “are sincere” in their efforts to moderate and limit violent content and hate speech. “But while content moderation can limit the distribution of clearly dangerous content, it doesn’t go far enough,” Obama said.

These comments came after the Biden administration announced the creation of a Disinformation Governance Board, which will be run by the Department of Homeland Security.

“The goal is to bring the resources of (DHS) together to address this threat,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.  The focus of the board will be to limit disinformation online, especially ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

However, critics are concerned with the Board limiting free speech.

“The Federal Government has no business creating a Ministry of Truth,” Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said. “The Department of Homeland Security’s ‘Disinformation Board’ is unconstitutional and unamerican, and I’ll be introducing a bill to defund it.”
